Santa Barbara police officers patrolling on bicycles arrested 44-year-old Charles Armstrong last week for allegedly stealing a chainsaw from a Milpas Street store.
At around 2:30 p.m. last Friday, reported Lt. James Pfleging, the officers were flagged down by an employee of A-OK Mower Shop who said Armstrong was witnessed by multiple people running from the business carrying a chainsaw. The tool was later found hidden in a hedge.
Officers tracked Armstrong — on state parole with prior convictions for felony theft — to the front of a nearby bagel shop. He denied his involvement in the incident and ever being in the business. Pfleging noted, however, that surveillance footage showed Armstrong grabbing the chainsaw from A-OK Mower Shop and running off.
Armstrong was booked into County Jail on charges of commercial burglary, possession of prescription drugs, and parole violation.

Well seems like Californias insane laws may have made the Private Prison Industry happier than a pig in *hit by pushing one more person to serve LIFE under the 3 Strikes law. Instead of providing any rehab over the past 20 yrs we have continued to slash and cut rehab almost every yr until it is down to nothing.
Over the last couple yrs and continuing on for at least 5 more yr we can expect more and more crime as people struggle to feed their families or even just themselve. The above commemts are full of snark yet not a one offers anything constructive. The Santa Barbara I grew up cared much more for people than it does today and I find that very very sad.

Aw, come on Smiley, this guy is clearly misguideed. In fact, I think he's got a case against the bagel shop.
If the bagels they sell are hard as a rock he can claim that the chainsaw was stolen out of necessity to slice the bagel.
Of course, the DA can always say that the chainsaw is excessive, a circular saw would've done just fine.
Maybe he needed the bagel to hide the prescription drugs in, bagels can be hollowed out for that. But silliness aside:
SmileySam: "The Santa Barbara I grew up cared much more for people than it does today and I find that very very sad."
Works both ways my deluded "progressive" friend. The scumbags, gang members, criminals, crusty BUMS (not homeless) have taken advantage of people caring more & have become entitled, carefree & aggressive.
They have taken advantage of the coddle & appease "progressives" that'll blame a hard working person like myself who:
1) Obeys the law (well, except speeding on the 101, I got a lead foot, my bad).
2) Contributes to charitable causes & pays his taxes.
3) Works hard for a living.
4) Is respectful of neighbors, the community & the environment.
5) Contributes to society.
Meanwhile, the vermin run amok, cause problems & somehow that is MY fault? You gotta be kiddin' right?
The ONLY thing these vermin understand is the heavy use of force against them.
Has nothing to do w/ race, ethnicity or whatever the latest ivory tower academic claims to be the cause of "injustice." It has to do w/ criminal activity. Now I'm gonna make a wager here:
I bet none of the usual "progressives" on this blog will come to the defense of Mr. Chainsaw here.
Why? HE'S WHITE! He probably deserves what he had coming according to them.
Now if this were a "person of color" (JEEZ! As a "person of color" I hate that term) there'd be public outcry. Any takers? The betting window is now open & I'm feeling lucky today :) henry

I wish we had a Private Prison Industry in California instead of the public prison guards and teachers union controlling our politicians. Our cost for incarceration is 3 times that of some other states.
Hank, I'm with you on the amazing lack of Progressives defense for thiswhitey convict, albeit he looks pretty good for a 44 year old multiple loser.
Your list of 5 items is identical to mine, including recidivist exceeding the speed limit on 101...touche'

Italiansurg: "he looks pretty good for a 44 year old multiple loser."
Could be all those prescription drugs Charlie Chainsaw was carrying. Better living through modern chemistry.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to pass some cars on the 101! HAHAHA! :) henry

I wonder what he'd rather have in prison---a bagel, or a chainsaw? This guy's entire story is written in his face: lost, disconnected, uncaring. He continues to shoot his own foot off and wonders why he's the victim.
While I do not support the model in which we incarcerate our social defects, the corporate law-affecting privatization of justice for money, but I'm glad these miscreants have a place to call home segregated from the rest of us.

Draxor: "I'm glad these miscreants have a place to call home segregated from the rest of us."
Definitely the voice of reason!
Draxor: "I wonder what he'd rather have in prison---a bagel, or a chainsaw?"
I think he'll settle for ANY illegal contraband.
Draxor: "He continues to shoot his own foot off and wonders why he's the victim."
Aw, come on Draxor, didn't you get the memo from the "progressives"?
You work, pay your bills & taxes, respect the community & obey the laws right?
Well my friend, because of all those marks against you this guy automatically gets victim status because you are in effect "The Man" & all his shortcomings are YOUR fault.
I'll forward you a copy of the memo, got mine a while back :) henry

He'll probably be able to order both bagels and chainsaws in prison with one of the contraband cell phones brought in by the public union prison guards...
