In Barney Brantingham’s column “The Lady and the Cop,” the police department’s side was clearly stated but where was mine? The part where I was picked up almost in the middle of the road by a witness after being hit by a car that was over 80 feet away when I stepped into the road. Where was Barney’s report about the driver seeing nothing? I contacted him to write about the injustice of my case, not to perpetuate it. Instead he publishes my photo for all to see as someone who cannot cross the road safely. I am deeply disappointed.

You looked left looked right and thought it was safe?
Every child when first learning to cross the street knows
The all mighty rule:
look left , look right, look left again..safe? -cross.
U don't look left then right and say hey that car seemed to be
Far enough away when I looked that way ummm.. How many seconds ago... ??
Because obviously if it was 80 feet away then you both collide you obviously didn't cross when it was safe.... ( when the car was 80 feet away, and also; if i strarted to walk when a car is 80 ft away i would be accross already if not atleast out of that lane by the time the car was even close) ...you crossed seconds AFTER the "safe" window closed... And without looking..
It's hard to admit fault especially when one gets
Hurt or embarrassed.. Or both.
Take care of yourself everyone. Don't assume anything in life.

If you consider rates of speed, 80 feet is hardly much space at all:
mph-----fph--------mpm-----fpm------fps
1----------5280-----0.02--------88-------1.47
15-------79200-----0.25-----1320-----22.00
20-----105600-----0.33-----1760-----29.33* (87.99' in 3 sec)
35-----184800-----0.58-----3080-----51.33
45-----237600-----0.75-----3960-----66.00
50-----264000-----0.83-----4400-----73.33
60-----316800-----1.00-----5280-----88.00
The original piece from Barney stated that the van was moving at 20 mph, giving the driver a little less than 3 seconds to impact. However, I personally tend to look farther ahead of my car than 3 seconds while driving, and think that 80 feet would have been enough time to adjust to a potential road hazard (pedestrian), as I should have already seen her prior to the final 80 feet.
Because the driver is the one operating 'heavy machinery', theirs is the duty to be more cautious. That does, however, assume that the average pedestrian would not attempt a crossing, if they judged their action to place them in immediate danger.

Dear Sonia, thank the lord you are alive and survived a run in with a car. It is offensive that you were sited when what you needed more than a cop was a paramedic. I guess 'protect and serve' is 'site and collect' but that is not news. It is also not news that pedestrians take way too much liberty with crosswalks, light times, and frequently suffer from poor judgement. Drivers are guilty of the same. Please keep this in mind next time and be extra carefull because you are only flesh and bone, a car is made of metal. 80ft may seem like a lot to a pedestrian, but it is nothing to a car.

Sonia, first we are glad you have recovered. We know you have suffered pain and injury as a result of this.
I think many people have based their opinions (including myself) on the "fact" that the point of impact was the passenger side window. If that "fact" is incorrect, please inform us.
If that "fact" is correct, please tell us how the car "hit you" on the passenger side window.

When you looked to the left, the car was 80 feet away. The trouble is you then looked right before stepping off the curb. By then, the van is closer....in fact almost past.

That intersection is wide open with really good visibility and a pedestrian at any corner should have been cause for caution, especially by a driver of a 2k lb car vehicle. But most drivers don't anticipate stopping but rather the opposite.
It would be interesting to see the police report. Did Barney Brantingham read it? But the previous article gives a fairly lurid account from commenter MarkMark. It could be that Ms. Harris in her complaint here, that Barney B. didn't relay information, had a misunderstanding. Maybe he missed something, or just didn't see anything thing supportive. Sometimes information doesn't get into the police report.
If it is documented that the driver saw "nothing" then that would be important because it could indicate that the driver was perhaps inattentive. Witnesses? I think it is interesting that it would take the judge so long to come to a decision. We need to keep in mind that the city attorneys office does not do justice. That office advises and represents the city in legal matters.
And Ms. Harris some people posting here may not be entirely heartless but sometimes I do wonder. Some have narrow hidden agendas along with their hidden identities. That says an awful lot about personalities. One commenter in particular is particularly transparent and is the resident phobic and anti-bulbout, anti-traffic calming queen.
Ironically if a curb extensions had been previously installed at this intersection it is very likely that your scenario would not have occurred. It is good to see you are apparently standing for the photo and are healing. It must be just terrible to have gone through that process physically and mentally and only to have read certain comments as well.
