When originally published, this letter was erroneously attributed to Santa Barbara City Councilmember Grant House. The author is, in fact, Grant Marcus. The Santa Barbara Independent apologizes for bungling the byline. Again, this letter was not written by Grant House.
President Obama:
I submit this with extreme disappointment and sadness. I have been a Democrat for all my voting life, some 40 years. I helped you get elected, contributed to your campaign, and walked precincts to get out the vote for you. I lead a celebration parade on your inaugural night down Main Street, Ventura, with streamers and party hats, and your indelible image on my shirt. I had the audacity to hope.
Martin Luther King once said that a man should be judged “not by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character.” It is for this reason, I will not be voting for you for president this next election. It will be the first time in my life I will choose not to vote for a Democrat.
Mitt Romney – or McMoney – is no choice either for the American people. Electing a king of corporations would commit our founding fathers to rolling in their graves.
We now have two corrupt parties having a rich man’s ball at the expense of all Americans, and offering no choice to average citizens anywhere in the country.
I grew skeptical with your cabinet appointments. Then with the escalation of the war. Then with your refusal to investigate the Bush/Cheney cabal. Then with your arrest of 400 nurses and doctors for wanting health care for all. Then with your protection of coal, gas fracking, and nuclear power. Then with your resounding absence in Wisconsin. Then with your signing the National Defense Act that allows for the secret detention of Americans without trial. Then your attack on immigrants throughout the country. And now, your continued use of drones, torture, black sites, and secret killings, and without conscience or hesitation, even of Americans, without transparency or justice.
Meanwhile, like Bush, you bailed out banks and Wall Street instead of Main Street, without one corrupt banker going to jail.
Your lack of change is visible in all the foreclosed houses that stand out like sore thumbs in our county. And you, sir, have no excuse for any of the above, because you aren’t the CEO of oil like Bandhar Bush, you are a constitutional lawyer.
I cannot be a good German supporting supremacist values that lead us on crusades all over the world while our country goes bankrupt, and more and more of our people beg for food and work at traffic signals with cardboard signs that read, “Help me! I am a single mom. My four children need your help!”
I cannot vote for a president that will not tax the war-mongering, insider-trading, shareholding rich while Americans barely survive on the streets, starving. These are not democratic values, ethical values, or Christian values. These are the examples of shame by out-of-touch Washington politicians who don’t give a rat’s behind about anyone but themselves.
This election, I will no longer support you, and, I will campaign against you as one Democrat who will not sacrifice his moral integrity or his democratic values for the good of the party. I will not be your lemming or chameleon following the blind leading the blind.
You sir, in all respect, have proven yourself nothing more than a servant in the White House, waiting for the next order to serve elitist, invisible power. You are the shield they hide behind. You had an opportunity to show sound leadership. The nation voted for genuine change. And yet, you have forgotten your roots and the community you came from. You have forgotten all your many campaign promises as well. Your silence on so many occasions only proved your lack of leadership and commitment. And in the process of forgetting and silence, you have undermined the very people who elected you.
The hope you once offered has been a charade. The peace candidate you portrayed was a lie. You are the enemy of progressive Democrats and independents across the country. You are the epitome of failure. “Change, yes we can!” was just a subverted slogan for your actions, which say, “Change, no we can’t.” It is for these reasons and so many more I cannot and will not vote for George Obama Bush for president. I will not vote for more of the same absence of choice.
I urge progressive Democrats and independents to write in a protest vote of “NO!” for president this election. Let the foolhardy repugnicans anddemorats continue to vote like idiots, though no choice does not a democracy make. – Sincerely, a long time Democrat who remembers Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the roots of his party, now in the diaspora.

Could the phrase "a good German" be construed as "hate speech" by the purveyors of all that is PC?
(Is the term "purveyors of all that is PC" itself a form of "hate speech?")
"Supremacist values?" "Now in the diaspora?"
I'm no big Obama fan either, but isn't this just a bit, erhhh, hysterical?

Now now. I feel your pain. But we need more progressive democratic members, not fewer. President Obama would be much better if that were the case. But like all elected officials President Obama is moderated by the middle and the extreme right; in order to keep the peace at home. Otherwise the results would be chaos and anarchy. And the fat cats would be fine either way but everyone else would be in much more pain. Just look back to machinations of the moneyed far right, the evolution and co-option of the Tea Party. Remember 2010. And I suspect that if President Obama is not careful that the "elitist, invisible power" would have him assassinated.

This should show what a loon Grant House is. Without going over it point by point, let's suffice to say that Grant House would take us down the same path that Europe has blazed before us.
Grant believes the only "good" employer is the government that they should either employ or support everybody.
If Grant couldn't make his sewing machine business survive, maybe he should have consulted Mitt. Companies that go bankrupt don't employ anybody.

What a cheap shot, Botany: "If Grant couldn't make his sewing machine business survive,..."
And not even true. If my memory serves, House ran his sewing machine business for well over 30 years, a darn good life for a local retailer.

Rude, no. A cheap shot, probably. But no less of a cheap shot than "McMoney". As with Mitt Romney, Grant House is a public figure and subject to the same type of criticism. My "cheap shot" is not out of context with this diatribe by Mr. House.

There's really not much to disagree with Mr. House's statement if anything. I'd like to add the increased attacks on medicinal marijuana patients. And the stonewalling on marriage equality. And..
And I really resent the news media (Indy included at times) for only presenting the candidates of the two parties and acting as if no else were on the ballot.

Good for Grant House for pointing out Obama's hypocrisy. Let's not forget how Obama used Jerimiah Wright's church for over 20 years and threw him under the train once Wright's anti-American tirades went public.
The problem though, goes far beyond Obama; Feinstein, Boxer, and Capps all support the NDAA and the Patriot Act, as does outgoing Republican Congressman Gallegly. Romney also supports the NDAA.

As a registered Democrat I often feel my vote is taken for granted. Obama had a window of opportunity to enact positive change early in his administration that got "squandered". Though I also feel that often issues remain unresolved so there is a perpetual boogeyman.

OK, so Grant's rant is loony, Botany, but your wholesale slamming of "Europe" doesn't work. Germany, the largest economy there, is humming along, exporting practically as much as China, mixing socialism with job-creating entrepreneurship, sending money to Greece [yeah, I know, 2/3rds goes back to French and German banks]. Outside of Bosnia the Europeans haven't undertaken any expensive wars since W.W. II (I don't count Libya operation).
Don's points are well taken, Obama has had to go to the middle and being the incumbent means he has to defend everything the government has done. The 1% (fat cats) win whichever party takes over.
Obama's personally choosing the drone targets is anathema and immoral. Still, he's the only choice since Mitt just wants to do the Ryan plan and further reduce taxes for the hyper-rich while destroying what shreds we have for the social safety net.

I think Grant needs a history lesson about the founding fathers. They wanted people (except people of color at the time) to have equal opportunity to achieve the American Dream. Mitt Romney was no different than John Hancock, George Washington or Thomas Jefferson. All were rich.
He also believes the current Democratic party doesn't share it's beliefs with those of FDR.

Without that sustenance, he would have never been an elected official. Now that he has no political ambition and no longer needs the party he feels free to blast Obama for almost every failing of the United States. Since the POTUS is not sufficently pure for Mr. House, he is going to take his vote elsewhere along with his party affilation. Do not let the puerta crack you in the trasero Grant! . No vote for Obama is as good as a vote for Rommney whom I assume would be more odious a POTUS to Mr. House than Obama.

I personally refuse to be held hostage by any Party. And that's exactly what most of the Dem slate this year, hostage votes. I remember the days when even an incumbent President had to win the primaries, it helped keep them honest. Now it's vote for whichever of the two major parties, not the individual candidate. Else we'll give you the candidate that scares you.
"sucking at the teat of the Democratic Party " you say.. perhaps, but he seems to have satisfied you as a constituent in his elected position, why else did you vote for him? So he makes a decision as a private individual that has no consequence on you per se, and you condemn him- in a bit of an ugly fashion.
I don't always agree with Grant House (measure Y is a glaring example); but he is entitled to his own opinions and vote whether you and I like it or not.

I am not a "hostage" to any party but by being a member of a party there has to be SOME loyalty. Anyone on the "Dem" slate this year is a far better choice than anyone on the "Repub" slate. You must have a very long memory because the last serious primary challenge to an incumbent POTUS was in the 1980 election. Ted Kennedy's vanity run was a disaster for Carter's reelection and paved the way for eight years of Reagan. Yes Ken, Grant is entitled to his opinions, like his blatant sell out on measure Y. But so am I. I stand behind my critique of House. Ugly fashion? As a Jew, I take extreme insult by being called a "good German" for supporting the Obama administration. Mr House also goes on to label me a "lemming" and a " chameleon ". I deserve an apology from House, but that coward would never show up on this thread to defend his asinine views. Herschel, as an AMERICAN "I take extreme insult by being called a 'good German' " since this insults one of our staunchest allies in Europe... All those "good Germans" of the 1990s are now about 92 and the other 99% of the Germans were born AFTER Hitler took power in 1932. In a perfect world all the issues you accuse Obama of ignoring will not happen until our governmental system of legislature is changed. Obama is not the problem. The problem are hypocrites like you who supported Mr. Rouse's campaign for City Council. Not voting for Obama is not going to change anything. It will just help infect our system more. Herschel_Grynspan: Playing your race is a cheap shot. "As a..." (fill in the blank) is just a ploy to evoke sympathy, much like a certain "Karl_Liebknecht" did a few years ago.
I think House's "good German" analogy makes sense. SOME of us see Obama for what he is: A dangerous power-mad person who has little regard for our (all of us--regardless of ethnicity/religion) Constituttional rights, and as I've pointed out, it ain't just Obama. Many in Germany in the 30's who were not Nazis didn't do enough to stop him and as we know, the rest is history. We don't want to be those people who years down the line will have to make excuses about why we didn't stand up when the Patriot Act, the NDAA, and God knows what else ended up being uses as a premise to arrest people who were suspected "enemies of the state". I'm not saying these doomsday predictions WILL happen, but the stage is being set is such a way that it would be very easy for it to come to pass.
And again Herschel, your sense of self-rightous persecution as well as your alter ego Karl_Liebknecht gets a little old after a while.
The only points you are correct about is the pointing out the difference between the 30's/90's, and correcting Ken about you're not being a Tea Party person. You are in fact, far to the left politically, so much so, that it precludes your ability to see that Obama is just as dangerous as Romney, otherwise Ken has it spot on.

Herschel, you are way sour. In the 1950s and 1960s the term "don't be a good German" was tossed around (see: Hannah Arendt) and it's come into common parlance. House uses it to say Obama is full of supremacist values (whatever that means). As an American (you don't have to be Jewish to be offended by this) "I take extreme insult by being called a 'good German' for supporting" [your words] anything. It's insulting to modern Germans, Herschel, something you don't seem to care about in your pissy rantings.

Dr. Dan,
Any Obama supporter should be insulted by House's rant, not just Jews. I hope that I have not offended any German folks. When people run out of good political arguments it is a good bet that they reference Nazi Germany. I believe that there is a Godwin's law on the subject, but that applies to comments on a thread. Grant went there in the letter. It is such a tired lazy analogy that any use of it makes me sick. Since you clearly pointed out, the cliche "the good Germans" references the majority of German citizens during the Nazi era. Therefore my statement was not an insult to modern Germans. I apologize to anyone who was offended by my "self- absorbed" reaction to House's hack job of an "op ed".
Your quip about Israeli immigration to Germany struck me as some goofy way of saying that "The Jews" = Israel and they are cool with the Germans ergo Jews like me should be cool with Germany. That is offensive. I love Germany and the German people! What I cannot stand is the over use of historical analogies like the one you felt free to lay out, the ancient Athenians indeed.
And then up steps Bill Clausen to extend the inane Nazi reference. But now Bill has cast Obama as a totalitarian power hungry tyrant determined to take away your rights!! More anti Obama hysteria but now from the paranoid right. Will you people figure it out? Is Obama a tool of the man like Grant asserts or is he a Socialist dictator in waiting as Bill claims?
BTW Bill what is your obsession with Karl_Liebknecht and me? I am not that poster. By bringing it up it makes you look like a kook.

You have stated you do not believe in Natural Law but it is all around you, is your world still flat?
Mathematically I can tell you the time of the Sunrise/Sunset, High /Low Tide for anywhere on the Planet, the dates of the Equinox, Eclipses and so forth.
This is Natural Law, it exits whether you like it or not. SpaceX just used Natural Law to send a capsule to the ISS and back.
During the days of Monarchy, concept that certain people are above others, intelligent free-minded peoples came up with the novel idea that Men are free by reason of their humanity to enjoy Natural Civil Rights. Man is subject to Natural Law and not the flawed Laws of Man, ie Government.
Bloomberg a Republican Progressive proposes to ban Soft Drinks over 16oz in New York, I guess we are stupid dumb fools unable to regulate our own lives; Government needs to do it for us.
The Social Conservative Right, Progressive Right or Left are all the same, they differ only in the exact Civil Rights that they feel entitled to Infringe on but they all Infringe in their quest for their vision of Utopian (Totalitarian) Dreams.
Bush and Obama both joint and severally have pissed all over the 4th Amendment.
Benjamin Franklin, author of one of my favorite books “Poor Richard’s Almanack”

House speaks for many former Democrat idealists who finally saw their party has become nothing more than a front for public employee unions, big government, worker inefficiencies, cronyism and greed, spending other people’s hard-earned tax dollars with impunity for their own vote-getting pet projects and people.
House does not yet show he understands why he is frustrated nor does he understand those holding signs on the freeway are calculated grifters looking for booze and drug money and are not vulnerable persons slipping through the cracks of our already generous social safety net.
Thank you Grant for speaking out. You still need to dig deeper because scales remain over your newly exposed eyes . Obama very much remembers his roots: elite prep school, Harvard affirmative action free pass, Chicago hard-ball union pay to play politics and voting present when sitting as a legislator in the illinois legislature so as not to disrupt his upwardly mobile political plans. Grant, you still are a victim of your own self-selected perception of this man and the world from which he comes, as well as your own Democrat party.
You are not a alone in your defection from the Democrat party of union shills. Work at every level to keep Democrat party unions shills off any publicly elected council or board, if your conversion is to be authentic. You were right to carry values into your political life. We need that. But to be carried into office with debts to pay public employee unions, as we have seen in the past few elections only furthers our downward spiral.

I go through a lot of this myself, but I refuse to support any candidate/party who believes spying on people, throwing them in jail and keeping them there without trial, promoting class warfare among ethnic lines, and supporting imperialism is ok.

Grant seems to have a good view from the cheap seats, complaining about an incumbent seeking reelection without offering any alternatives.

The purpose of this note is to let you know I did not write the letter "Ex-Democrat". It is a horrible diatribe against President Obama and values I stand for. No matter whether you agree with me politically or not, I want you to know I had absolutely nothing to do with this letter. I have asked Indy staff for their assistance in straightening this out. Please tell your friends that Grant House did not go off the deep end. I am horrified that this was published in my name and even more so if anyone were to believe it came from me.

First, that "letter" could have been from anyone named "Grant".
Second, the Indy obviously needs to fix its verification policy, or even screen them based on known email sending addresses.
Thirdly, a prominent Democrat complaining about Obama, even if a hoax, sure does bring out the freak show equating a disappointment in civil rights enforcement with sugar drinks and imagined nazis.

Yikes, that was a bit of a blunder!

The reference to votiing for 40 years was probably a clue, I don't think Grant House is that old.

At least Mr. House knows who his friends are now. I'd suggest in this case deleting all letters that reference Grant House as the writer since the personal attacks are now beyond unwarranted.

Is this a case of our 2nd U.S. president laying blame on our 18th president?

For those of you who haven't climbed back up to the top of the article:
When originally published, this letter was erroneously attributed to Santa Barbara City Councilmember Grant House. The author is, in fact, Grant Marcus.
The Santa Barbara Independent apologizes for bungling the byline. Again, this letter was NOT written by Grant House. (6/11/12)

Who the hell is this council member Grant House anyway. Isn't there a nice development on de la Vina with that name. Confusing. Almost an Emily Litella "never mind" moment.
Still, don't go off the deep end Grant Marcus. Conservatives still have this country, and beyond, all catawampus. We need more liberals and forward thinking progressives, not fewer.

What I did think was peculiar was "I lead a celebration parade on your inaugural night down Main Street, Ventura, with streamers and party hats, and your indelible image on my shirt." Why would Grant House go to Ventura for a parade, I wondered, although the streamers and party hats sounded true to form; but I also had wondered why he would support Measure Y, so it seemed more likely than not, given the once reputation of the Independent, that the letter was for real!

It's interesting that Grant Marcus didn't request a correction of the byline. He was probably jumping for joy at all the controversy it was generating. If the byline was correct to begin with, few would care about this bizarre diatribe.

Wow, it took nine days for the Independent to see that this article was not from Grant House but Grant Marcus. I would expect that editorial quality from a high school paper, not the Independent. Who is Grant Marcus? This is much more than a typo. There will be more to this story.
