The Carpinteria City Council, after years of discussion and heated public meetings, voted to officially ban single-use bags Monday night. The ordinance’s last reading and final adoption came with a 4-1 vote with Councilmember Joe Armendariz dissenting. The decision puts Carpinteria at real risk of being sued by the Save the Plastic Bag Coalition, which told the city before the vote it would launch litigation if restaurants were not exempted from the ban. The group cites safety concerns around transporting hot food items out of restaurants.
The ordinance mandates that small stores that make less than $5 million annually can still dole out paper bags to their customers. Larger grocery stores will have to start abiding by the ban as early as July of this year; smaller stores have until July 2013 to make the transition.
Armendariz voted against the ordinance, stating its language needed further revision in order to sidestep the potential lawsuit that he predicted could cost the city $100,000 to fight. The board discussed the matter, but the majority ultimately remained steadfast in its approval. One of Councilmember Kathleen Reddington’s last statements confirmed her strong stance on the ban. “If anything,” she said, “I think the ban will create more opportunities, more tourism for the city. We have a chance to set an example here.”

This is great! In Europe you are charged for bags and the environment will be saved millions of bags over the years. I don't see how this will boost tourism though?

The SB News Press delivers our newspaper every day with single use plastic bags, which is roadside litter in our neighborhood.

Translation:
Conservative: If we pass this law, we will lose money.
Liberal: I don't care. We'll find a way to screw businesses for the tab.

They're going to lose on the lawsuit though... stupid to force inclusion of restaurants in this.

Please, people get real. Just buy a few multiuse bags and take them with you to the store. It's just not that difficult to do!!
I live on Kauai and this bag ban has been in affect for about 2 yrs and it works. Takes a little time to remember to bring bags to the store each time but the more you do it, it'll become habit. Besides that you WILL be helping the environment. You need to get over yourselves.

So Liana. When my family goes to dinner at a restaurant, make sure we bring bags just in case we don't eat our entire meal? Lame.....very, very Lame.

Restaurants will probably just have some paper bags on hand for you to use if you have lots of food containers to carry out. No big deal.

No, Beach Fan and East Beach,
Restaurants should supply biodegradeable boxes for food. They do here...no problem. Our oceans are getting polluted with plastic and the seal life is suffering considerably. The land fills are full of non biodegradeable trash. Wake up people! We are part of the problem and not a part of the solution when we resist this kind of small change!!!

No disagreement here Liana.
I think BeachFan was concerned about carrying multiple food containers.

Hence the term "family". If they go with paper bags, I'm cool with that. I love Hawaii, but those boxes are not cheap. The cost gets passed on to us, and as of late, disposable income is smaller and smaller. Don't know about you, but when you have 4 people eating dinner, you can have lot's of boxes.

Paper bags aren't sauce-proof. It was stupid to include restaurants in this. Ordering in take-out in Carp is no longer on the menu.
