Local Author Wins Poetry Award

Lee Wardlaw, local children’s book author, is the 2012 winner of the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award for her children’s book Won Ton – A Cat Tale Told in Haiku (Henry Holt Books for Young Readers, 2011).

Won Ton, illustrated by Eugene Yelchin, tells the story of a wary shelter cat and the boy who takes him home.

The Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award, established in 1993, is presented annually to an American poet or anthologist for the most outstanding new book of children’s poetry published in the previous calendar year. Books are judged by a panel of nationally recognized teachers, librarians and scholars.

Mr. Hopkins, the award-winning author and anthologist of more than 100 books of poetry, co-sponsors the award with the Pennsylvania Center for the Book, the Penn State University Libraries, and the Pennsylvania School Librarians’ Association.

Ms. Wardlaw will receive a handsome plaque and a $1,000 honorarium at the PSLA conference in Hershey, PA on April 13th.

Ms. Wardlaw grew up in Santa Barbara and attended local schools. She has a BA in Education from Cal Poly, SLO, and recently received her AMI-Primary Diploma from the Montessori Institute of San Diego. She’ll earn her M.Ed. from Loyola University, Maryland in 2013.
