The Santa Barbara Independent looks macho, feels macho, and reads macho. For example, 13 of the 14 writers listed in the Table of Contents this week are men. Women are credited for the Calendar of Events, the Arts & Entertainment Listings, and the Movie Guide. It seems that organizing lists is the main thing of which you deem women capable.

WOW this is what you make your decisions on? that a journalist sex is what makes an article have merit or not?.
Personally I kinda think the SBI is to feminine, but will try and accept it for what it is, a local paper.
As a macho male I edited a few other of my opinions to make them more acceptable to you

Carole, have a look at the masthead on page 6 when you get a chance, and notice that the head of most dept.'s are women.

In my opinion, any organization or employer should use the most skilled and qualified worker for the position in question as within the Indy where their editor in chief is the most skilled and capable for that position.

This is probably one of the most kneejerk and misinformed letters I've seen in awhile. Yes, look at the masthead and then write an apology!
And I agree with SBLoc, if the only reason you're hiring me is because I'm a white male I don't want the job. There are far too many people willing to float by on the superficial while caring not they have neither brains nor talent, and the Indy is already not immune so don't encourage worse. And if it really upsets you, start your own paper.

This letter proves the only difference between the PC crowd and the Tea Party is which side of the aisle they're sitting on.

Isn't she running for something? May explain "rationale" behind letter.

That figures Zappa, she must be running to entertain neocons with her parody of a Progressive.
The last time I saw them, both Martha Sadler and Starshine Roshell were still very much women.

Indeed she's running for Sup and before she loses the Indy endorsement she's going to cry sexism beforehand;so there's a ready-made excuse why her delusions shouldn't be dashed. so lets all make a note of her opening salvo against "the sexist liberal media". Welcome to the public sphere Ms. Lieff - I do it makes you grow up instead of get worse.

I was at a community dialogue on public sector unions a week or so back, at the Natural History Museum, and someone who identified herself as "Carole Lieff" created quite a stir.
She was strongly committed to her "personal research" into some facts on retirement statistics, and was also insistent she be heard, no matter how long it took.
Even after the (terrible) moderator tried to reign her rambling speech in -- asking for questions rather than the lecture she insisted on giving us -- she kept on talking. Leiff even went so far as to demand "why are you trying to silence me?" when it was clearly requested at the beginning of the evening that direct questions be asked , and pontificating would not be tolerated.
This behavior did not create a good first impression on me, and if this letter-writer is the same person, double that.

It is the same C_A_B, pre-emptive excuse and free campaign ad all at the same time. She thinks she's media savvy, I think it will be fun tearing her to pieces each and every time.

Hey people, here's her biography, according to her own website. Read this and you'll see how out-of-it she is.

First of all, great comments by Ken_Volok--precise and most of all, true.
I've noticed this is the third letter in about a month (one of the others coming from Susan Rose) that is an attack on Y-Chromosome-Americans.
I'm 50 years old and started become aware of things c.1972 and I really thought the movement for change/social justice was about bringing people--ALL people--together. It seems these days it's more about attacking anyone who isn't part of a designated oppressed demographic.
Was I fooled as a young kid, or have extremists hijacked the civil rights agenda?

Lieff misses the point. One Spanish surname on the entire Independent staff. Why isn't she talking about *that*?
