Why isn't this going on year-round? We should have the opportunity as a community to help facilitate music and the arts in schools any way we can.

Especially given that the mountains of cash raked in "for the schools" always seem to disappear down the black hole of "administrative expenses" (IE fat salaries for paper pushers and bean counters, ad nauseum) while the actual teachers themselves live on peanuts and the kids go without the things and courses they need.

This is not likely to change any time soon, and "the schools" & "education" will keep shoving the grabtastic hand in our collective pockets for guilt money as long as possible (with no discernible positive results for the kids themselves), until we taxpayers start saying "no" and demanding an accounting of where our $ is actually going.

Meanwhile, projects such as this one in the article have great merit and should be encouraged on a year-round basis. Let's do what we can to support music and the arts on a tangible level. Kids need instruments, they need sheet music, they need equipment, teachers, bands to play in and places to perform. Most of all, they need the support of their community.
