As the Santa Barbara art scene comes out of post-holiday hibernation, we’re looking forward with anxious eyes to the coming months. This winter, the Santa Barbara Independent arts editors are hand-selecting some of the season’s must-see performances, concerts, and exhibitions, and highlights range from buzz-worthy indie rock acts to modern takes on opera classics to high-octane historical musicals. The New Digital Comics - Santa Barbara Teens Zoe Serbin and Emma Steinkellner reflect on how they got started drawing comics.
Dance - A peek at the coming season, including critic’s pick and other not-to-be-missed dance events.
Pop, Rock & Jazz - This season’s concert highlights range from world music to indie acts to one rocking kids concert.
Classical - This season promises an exciting opera, several great symphony programs, and recitals by such international stars as Christian Tetzlaff, Leonidas Kavakos, Joshua Bell, and Anne-Sophie Mutter.
Theater - Theater this winter ranges from a rock musical at Center Stage Theater to two new original plays — Platinum Circle at Westmont and Appoggiatura at UCSB.
Visual Arts - The substantial Latin American collection at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art gets a 60-year retrospective, while the UCSB AD&A Museum shows off its holdings in images of gas stations.
