Three people were hurt in a wrong-way driver collision Friday morning on northbound Highway 101 just south of the Mission Street exit. According to City Fire Department spokesperson Gary Pitney, the incident happened at around 6 a.m. and involved four cars. Three victims, all driving alone, were trapped in their vehicles, which sustained major damage. They were extricated and rushed to Cottage Hospital within 30 minutes of the first 9-1-1 call, Pitney said. Their conditions are unknown.

The CHP, which is investigating the incident, was unable to release any information on the wrong-way driver or any possible criminal charges. The agency’s spokesperson, an officer who answered the phone said, would return to the office Monday.

Wrongway driving on freeways could be prevented with pop-up tire shredders place on exit ramps, activated by radar guns aimed towards wrong way drivers. The cars would halt before they got to the freeway.
