Right in our midst, a man killed his parents and children with a knife. A student killed three people with a knife before killing and trying to kill more with a gun. We are missing the leadership to facilitate social and economic conditions that support a healthy population. We need moral guidance to recognize the flaws in our system that allow the acceptance of the behavior of unhealthy individuals, until they kill.

The outrage should be against the system and the aberrant individuals. It’s a waste of energy and a diversion to focus on a deranged person’s choice of weapon.

We must ask why we are creating so many people who do not value human life and who are filled with rage. We must ask why we are unwilling to take the time and expense to require guidance for those who show abnormal behavior. Our obsessive fear of offending anyone has crossed over the line of common sense.

If we doubled the number of teachers, counselors, and police officers, then paid them well and made them accessible to everyone (and if we halved the number of administrators), we wouldn’t so often be in the position of sending teams of grief counselors to schools and workplaces.
