I'm struck by the fact that we have the same last name as this alleged murderer, and that, without the shaved head and tatoos, he would look pretty similar to my son. My son is a peace-loving intellectual who's wise beyond his teenage years. The contrast with Adrian Robles is almost impossible to comprehend.
How was this other Robles boy raised - how much hatred and violence was he steeped in from the time he was little - in order to become a soul-dead thug?
How do we reach the parents of young children and persuade them to change the child-rearing methods that perpetuate alienation and aggression? One approach that's working is the Harlem Baby College ( http://www.hcz.org or http://www.npr.org/templates/story/st... ). Perhaps we could implement a similar program here.

Starshine, you're terrific! I very much rue the fact that I didn't do a good job of holding my kids to account when they were little. I now have one teenager who has grown pretty responsible and two who are total slobs - aargh! I'm working on getting them to deal with their own messes, but it's much harder now that they're in the rebellious phase.
