I have not smoked that much yet today, but I do know it is FARREN Road.

Ferren was a famous guy from UCSB who moved back to New Jersey a few years ago.

Measure V rocked. Geez, 70 percent of the voters supported it, and only Travis Armstrong had negative things to say. What a dope. Once again, he's out of touch with reality and with the community. Even the numb-nutted taxpayers association got this one right. I just may take an adult ed class and improve my mind.

Men and their macho hormones have messed up everything. Can we hope Hillary Clinton would bring a woman's intelligence and perspective to domestic and international affairs? I don't know, she seems so 'establishment,' but I'd rather take my chances with her, try something new. She might really care about health care reform, education, peace on earth. ... Anyway, it looks like Obama will be our 'man.' We'd better hope he can do the right job. happy mother's day.

The boycott worked. That's good.
Good people lost their jobs. That's bad.
Is the ship finally sinking?
Or a better question: Can we hope that Travis and Scott Steep are next?

Dearest Margaret: Thanks for the update and for staying on top of Goleta's present and future. I'm thinking about all those new housing units, and all the new people in them. The buyers will come from outside our area. They will be rude on the (ever-more-congested) road; they will have children, who will expect the now-false "American Dream" and a new home for themselves, new cars, new tennis shoes, electronic gadgets, etc. And then they will complain how nothing should be built on the Gaviota Coast or north of Cathedral Oaks Road, and they'll bemoan the loss of "openness" and breathing room. ... They'll be like Gary Earl, living on newly-converted ag land himself, crying about how the next parcel should remain natural or open or in farming.
Larwin and its people are looking so short-term -- fill in the empty spaces, makes lots of money, send THEIR kids to college, retire, and die rich white men with flowery obituaries filled with Christian platitudes. ... Well, maybe we've all lost sight of the future. Our way of life will have to crash and burn somewhere down the line. Peak oil? Collapse of the oceans and the food chain? Global warming?
None of it looks good, does it? ... Looking forward to your next column. peace, love, dope, BH

Your writer forgot to mention (or perhaps he didn't know) that Shilo is located where the Esmerelda Market used to be. That market was run by longtime Goleta residents, Latino family who opened it during WWII, I think. It was a hub of the neighborhood and a place where people forged relationships and built community bonds. Seems Shilo is continuing the tradition. ... The stuffed cabbage is delicious. Good for the munchies.

Why didn't you mention Travis's DUI conviction too? ... Maybe that's why he is obsessed with JK's record. As a reformed loadie myself, I recommend sobriety to all these people who drink and drive. ... But more to the point, why can't James continue in his job even with a "checkered past?" No one is saying that Travis shouldn't be an editor because of his DUI. (There are more serious reasons he himself should be allowed to resign, as we all know.) Finally, the SBNP is using its powers inappropriately, AGAIN! Uh, "they" don't like Janet Wolf's housing policy-making, so go after her secretary? It's like a bad dream, like a bad acid trip, man.
