I'll give you an example of vital info which is being withheld today (8/16). The authorites have blacked out readings of Particulate Matter in Santa Barbara and are only reporting the ozone levels. This is unconscionable, and should be rectified immediately. I reject the argument that such information would only induce panic. (Could lower hotel bookings, true.) People with small children, the elderly, those suffering from allergies and asthma need to know so they can take steps accordingly. Might "The Independent" look into this?

This is the first time in my life I've been moved to comment on a public forum.
Since moving here from rural Nor Cal a year ago, I have been cursed by faster (and less patient) drivers, insulted by a few shop attendants, called a foul name by a forty-something man skating, and had a vicious note left on my car. This is a city, and I understand there are some covertly angry people out there - heavily out-numbered by the interesting and congenial Santa Barbarans I meet every single day.
HOWEVER: though I both live and work in areas of SB with homeless people, not ONCE have I been insulted in any way or "spat at" by them. Could it be because I extend them a smile when it seems appropriate, as I try to do to others? Human beings, one and all.
If you find yourself furious with a person who is homeless, in my opinion you need to look closer at your motivation. It's always easy to take stuff out on the vulnerable among us.
Thanks for reading....

Having moved here recently from a quiet and lights-free ranch in the Sacramento Valley, I having no trouble appreciating the goals of this crusade. Unfortunately, since moving to Santa Barbara we have experienced two attempted break-ins, one seriously aggressive, (while at home) - in what you might think of as a good neighborhood (the Mesa). Sorry, folks, but in this city our lights stay ON.
