For me, living near UCSB has only been a negative. The University does what they want, with little respect for the local community or environment. They hold community meetings and make promises, but then never follow through.
I don't know where you get your numbers from, but the University is a state entity which pays no property taxes. Each time they buy private property they reduce the tax revenue that would be available to pay for local services. From my experience, they take far more than they provide.
