The Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Commission voted
unanimously last week to create a pilot program that will give
skateboarders under 12 years old their own time at Skater’s Point
park on the waterfront. The three-month program – which will go
into effect this weekend – calls for the park to be open for
“grommets only” from 9-11 a.m. every Saturday and for additional
corporate-sponsored kids’ clinics on Sunday afternoons, when
possible. The program differs sharply from the one originally
proposed late last year, which would have set aside four hours for
the young skaters on both Saturdays and Sundays. The commission
also voted unanimously to create a skate parks advisory board that
will – among other things – work to create a second local park and
address problems of protective-gear enforcement.
