The Day Fire – so named because it started on Labor Day – was
finally contained on Monday. The conflagration, which was sparked
by a trash fire in the Los Padres National Forest, ultimately cost
$73.5 million and burned more than 162,700 acres, making it the
fifth-largest fire in California history. Astonishingly, it
destroyed only five buildings, one of them a home.
