Every year, 700,000 people in the U.S. suffer a stroke; that
works out to one stroke every 45 seconds. Strokes are the
third-ranked cause of death and the top cause of adult disability,
but, according to the National Stroke Association, about 80 percent
are preventable. The Rehabilitation Institute at Santa Barbara
(2415 De la Vina St.) is inviting the public to learn more about
strokes during a free series of five three-hour presentations held
on consecutive Saturdays, beginning January 13. The series will
cover the anatomy and physiology of strokes, as well as stroke
prevention and rehabilitation. The series is designed for families,
friends, and caregivers of those affected by strokes, and nursing
professionals and recreation therapists can earn three CEUs per
session. For info, call 687-7444.
