Documentary Chronicles Coastal Environmentalism
Thirty-eight years after the oil spill that catalyzed the Santa
Barbara environmental movement, the county’s ocean waters are still
a hotly contested resource. Sand, Sun, Oil & Gas, a
new documentary from the Ventura-based environmental activist
organization Earth Alert!, details the history of oil production
off the Santa Barbara coast.
The documentary will debut at a free screening at the Santa
Barbara on Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. A discussion of coastal
protection will follow.
Janet Bridgers, an Earth Alert! representative who wrote and
edited the 28-minute documentary, applauded the activism of those
living near the channel. “This documentary shows the tenacity the
citizens of this beautiful stretch of coast have repeatedly
displayed to minimize coastal industrialization and protect marine
life, fishing and tourism,” Bridger said in a press release. “Their
efforts are epic.”
