Budget Cuts Spawn Teacher Layoffs

As part of its ongoing budget gutting process, the Santa Barbara School District officially laid off 48 teachers on 5/8. Cut entirely from the teaching ranks of the district’s secondary school, the firings – which were foreshadowed by dozens of pink slips in mid March and millions of dollars of budget cuts in late April – were a means of reconciling the three-year, 3 percent pay raise given to teachers earlier this spring.
