You Have the Power to Change Santa Barbara! is a newly created site designed entirely to find out what Santa Barbarans really want. The city is sponsoring a new two-year plan deemed “Plan Santa Barbara,” which is seeking out community opinion and response fon matters of housing, transportation, development, and environmental impact. Plan SB wants to hear from people across the spectrum about what residents like, don’t like, and would like to see happening in town. The program is already reaching out, informing community members about current events and future ways to get involved.

Plan SB encourages residents to attend public workshops, the first of which is being held in June. These meetings will focus on residents’ feelings over SB’s current state and the future of its development. All meetings will have Spanish translators and Spanish subgroups available. Attendees are expected to read a booklet prior to each workshop that covers background information and future options for the issues being discussed.

Workshop discussion groups are currently scheduled for:

Wednesday, June 13th: 6-9pm at the Faulkner Gallery, located at 40 E. Anapamu Street

Saturday, June 16th: 9am-noon at La Casa de la Raza, located at 601 E. Montecito Street

Thursday, June 28th: 6-9pm at the Westside Community Center, located at 423 W. Victoria Street

Saturday, July 7th: 9am-noon at the Hope School, located at 3970 La Colina Road

The second public forum, occurring in late summer/early fall, will address education and public health. The last workshop, slated for fall 2007/spring 2008, will explore public policy options. The Board & Commissions and City Council will be presented with a Community Input Summary in fall 2008, with the presentation of the Policy Framework following in spring/summer 2009.

For more ways to get involved, the May episode of Inside Santa Barbara, airs on Channel 18 and will broadcast community forums and discussions. Flyers and brochures are being mailed out to city residents informing them of updates and upcoming events. Further, Plan SB members are offering to personally attend an organization’s meeting.
