A group of six U.S. scientists, including UCSB professor David Lea, published a paper warning that civilization is in “imminent danger” from climate changescaused by global warming. The group, led by James Hansen of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, found the sea-level rise estimates published by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to be overly conservative. Hansen’s group predicts sea levels will rise by several meters by 2100, while the IPCC reported a 40-centimeter increase.
