Let Peace Begin with Me

Thu Aug 02, 2007 | 06:00am

Next Thursday, August 9, from 5-6 p.m., eight-year-old Abigail Pacheco, a fourth grader at McKinley School, will follow the example of a Japanese girl who inspired the world to work for peace. Abigail will be the featured speaker at the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation’s 13th Annual Sadako Peace Day Ceremony. Many people know the story of Sadako, who was diagnosed with leukemia as a result of exposure to radiation from the Hiroshima atomic bomb, and her paper cranes; in her honor, in 1995, on the 50th anniversary of that bombing, the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation and La Casa de Maria dedicated the Sadako Peace Garden. The event, which is free to the public, will be held at the Sadako Peace Garden (800 El Bosque Rd.) and will feature singing by the Skylarks, a children’s chorus, as well as poetry from several local poets.
