UCSB is one of about 100 campuses nationwide selected by conservative activist David Horowitz to launch his “Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week” next week. According to Horowitz’s press statements, the purpose of the event is to expose the “two biggest lies” of the American left: that George Bush created the war on terror and that global warming is the biggest threat on the planet.

Campus officials are casting a wary eye on the two public events scheduled for UCSB, hoping that any confrontations with anti-war activists will be kept to a dull roar. Next Tuesday, activists affiliated with American Students for Israel will screen the film Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West. The film was secured with funds from Associated Students. Next Thursday, pro-Israel radio commentator Dennis Prager will speak at an event sponsored by the College Republicans. And conservative syndicated columnist Michelle Malkin will be addressing the Young Americans for Freedom at the Reagan Ranch.

Next week’s activities coincide with an anti-war rally scheduled for Saturday in downtown Santa Barbara with a focus on preventing the outbreak of a new war with Iran. Anti-war activists are already scheduling various teach-ins and symposia to counter the impression that all Muslims are religious fanatics bent on death and destruction.
