Marking today’s third report of vehicular mishaps near the Santa Barbara County stretch of Highway 101, the California Highway Patrol reported 23-year-old Carpinteria resident Penelope Ayala had to be extricated from her crashed Volkswagen Jetta at 1:42 p.m. today near the Sheffield Road exit off the highway’s northbound lanes. According to a report from the CHP, Ayala’s vehicle swerved off road and over an embankment. The vehicle flipped onto its roof and slid across the Sheffield Road exit and into a tree. Ayala sustained major injuries to her left arm and left hand and was then trapped inside the Jetta before being freed by Montecito Fire rescuers and transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

As a result of the accident, the Sheffield Road ramp was closed for approximately an hour.
