The three-month-long dry spell that has plagued the swimmers who use Santa Barbara’s popular public pool Los Banos Del Mar has ended. On Monday, August 25, repairs to the pool were completed one week ahead of schedule.
The beachfront pool facility, which had been closed since June 21 after city aquatic officials determined Los Banos’ leaky deep end wall needed to be replaced, was originally scheduled to re-open August 29. However, city aquatics director Rich Hanna said that an efficient general contractor helped to finish the project sooner than the Parks and Recreation Department had expected, and so the pool will now be open again to swimmers year-round.
“We were fortunate enough to have a good contractor, so some of the concerns we had going into the project were mitigated quickly,” Hanna said. “Everything just went right.”
In addition to replacing the deep end wall – which was leaking water into the facility’s pump room – Hanna said that workers installed tile lane markers on pool’s floor, added a few new ladders, and did some routine re-plastering work.
Los Banos, located at 401 Shoreline Dr., is now open daily for adult lap swimming from sunrise until 10 p.m.
