At its 9/9 meeting, the Santa Barbara School District board voted to approve a dress code prohibiting clothing considered disruptive to students. While the California Education Code prohibits a district-wide policy on “gang-related attire,” each school can enact more specific policies against clothing. The board adopted rules that encourage clean and neat dress, and bar oversized, revealing, and “dangerous” clothing. Principals must decide how to judge “gang-related apparel” as defined by the school district.
