UCSB Reaches Record in Research Funding

UCSB received a total of $194 million in research support from external sources in the last fiscal year, breaking all previous records for annual research funding at the school. A variety of research units, as well nearly 50 academic departments, received this funding, which came from both federal agencies as well as private nonprofit foundations and technology companies. The largest grant was awarded to Michael Gazzaniga of the psychology department by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and will be used to establish a national program on the law and neuroscience.

Some $17 million of the $194 million of funding came from industry sponsors or federal sources redirected through industry partners, reflecting the university’s emphasis on developing new approaches to corporate collaborations. Among the achievements that have resulted from corporate partnerships is a blood-clotting gauze developed into commercial applications based upon technology advances made by Professor Galen Stucky of the department of chemistry and biochemistry.

Chancellor Henry Yang is quoted in a UCSB press release as saying, “I congratulate all of our colleagues on this year’s record level of research funding-more than double what it was a decade ago! It is a wonderful testament to the pre-eminence of our faculty and researchers, and the intellectual vitality of our campus.”
