Rose Cafe on the Mesa
A Review of This Place for Satisfying Mexican Food Run by the Guevara Family
Where: 1816 Cliff Dr., 965-5513; rosecafe2.com
What: Satisfying Mexican food made by the Guevara family, who have been serving up this cuisine for more than 50 years in different S.B. locations.
How much? Breakfasts $6.95-$8.95, chilaquiles $7.25-$9.95, enchiladas $7.95-$9.95
The dish: This brightly colored storefront on the Mesa (sister restaurant to the slightly more urban Rose on Haley) is a local’s favorite for Mexican food. Perhaps never more crowded than on weekends for breakfast, a big part of that draw are the killer chilaquiles, freshly fried corn tortilla strips jumbled with eggs, chiles, bell pepper, onions, tomato, and then cheesed. This simple mix is a brilliantly satisfying way to start a day (even more so on a Sunday morning after a too enjoyable Saturday night). You can get it with chile verde or chorizo if you don’t want to have to eat until dinner. The menu is quite extensive, running from combos pairing up chile rellenos with the usual suspects to tamales, which are not always available, which means they are fresh when they are. Also, for the adventurous there’s menudo the menu hails as “the best around.”
