No Country

Roger Durling, quoted on the Focus on Quebec during the SBIFF, makes a grievous error when he says about Quebec, “and there’s going to be a mini ‘invasion’ of filmmakers from that country” [“2010 Film Fest Unveiling,” 1/20/2010]. Quebec is still a province of Canada. Our Prime Minister accorded Quebec the status of a “nation” in the sense that a people in a place and with a distinct culture can be considered a nation, but politically, it isn’t a country. It’s a pity I’m not in S.B. this winter to carry the flag for Canada. — Cubby Marcus
