Santa Barbara Grows Art
Spring brings new growth to Santa Barbara’s charred foothills and a new kind of show at SBCC’s Atkinson Gallery, where architectural models and drawings by Randall Stout will be on display through Friday, March 26. Stout is known particularly for his design of museums; this is a chance to appreciate his buildings as objects d’art in their own right. Speaking of the foothills, the Tennis Club has established itself among the city’s regular visual art venues. Until Wednesday, April 7, you’ll find collages by Tony Askew, Marlene Struss, and others displayed on the lobby walls. Check out this week’s cover story for the skinny on Sanford Biggers, whose multidisciplinary exhibit Moon Medicine runs at CAF through Sunday, May 2.
Oil and water aren’t reputed to mix, but Benjamin Anderson’s large-scale oil paintings submerge their subjects beneath rippling waves. Catch his show Just Add Water at the Anderson Art Collective before Sunday, May 9. Water is also the subject of Roy Fowler’s wave series, on view at Patty Look Lewis Gallery through Thursday, June 17. For more close observations of nature, check out Field Studies, a group show at Marcia Burtt Gallery from Friday, March 19-Sunday, May 2, and Kathleen Elsey’s fauvist works at Kathryne Designs & Gallery through the end of June.
March brings two new exhibitions to SBMA. Colorscope features abstract paintings from the 1960s and ’70s and runs from Saturday, March 20-Sunday, August 15, while woodblock prints by Katsushika Hokusai go up on Tuesday, March 23. April 1st is a 1st Thursday downtown with lots of openings, including Robert J. Rowley’s pastel landscapes at Gallery 113 through Friday, April 30, Agustin Castillo and Elana Kundell’s abstract paintings at Artamo through Sunday, May 2, and Carpinterian Pamela Enticknap’s whimsical beach scenes at Sullivan Goss through Sunday, May 30.
One day later, The Arts Fund opens a show of work by master teachers from their teen mentorship program. Artists as Mentors runs through Saturday, May 15. Parents take note: The Architectural Foundation hosts Kids Draw Architecture Saturday sketch sessions on April 10 and 17, as well as exhibiting new abstract paintings by Michele Zuzalek Tuesday, April 13-Friday, May 28. From Saturday, April 17-Wednesday, May 5, the C Gallery in Los Alamos holds its themed show, Pink; submissions are due by Saturday, April 10. Another juried show, the annual Views and Visions exhibit at Westmont College’s Reynolds Gallery, runs Thursday, May 20-Thursday, June 24.
Come May, don’t miss CAF’s Forum Lounge series which brings Luz y Sombra (An Electro-Bilingual-Opera) to the space on Thursday, May 6. Contemporary art from private collections around town will be on display at CAF Saturday, May 22-Sunday, July 18.
The end of spring means two things at SBMA: the arrival of the much-anticipated show of contemporary Korean photography, Chaotic Harmony, opening Saturday, July 3 through Sept. 19 at SBMA , and the 2010 season of Nights, kicking off Thursday, June 10, with a special, extended evening.
