TOP SPORTING EVENTS: SEPTEMBER 7-13

UCSB will try to get on the winning track in men’s soccer tonight (Tue., Sept. 7) against a tough opponent, the Creighton Bluejays. Game time at Harder Stadium is 7 p.m. The Gauchos are 0-1-1 after playing two overtime games on the road last week, a 1-0 loss to Cal State Bakersfield and a 1-1 tie with New Mexico.

Creighton comes in with a 2-0-0 record. The Bluejays have found what the Gauchos have lacked – a finishing touch. They defeated Loyola Chicago, 2-0, and doubled that output in a 4-0 victory over UNC Greensboro. They have been very successful against California schools, going 9-0-3 in their last 12 matches, including victories over Cal Poly and UCLA last year.

The Gauchos will be looking for ways to get the ball past Creighton junior goalkeeper Brian Holt, who holds the Missouri Valley Conference record with his 0.60 goals-against average. Sam Garza scored UCSB’s goal at New Mexico to salvage the 1-1 tie.

The Gauchos will host Davidson (1-0-1) from North Carolina on Friday night.

In high school football action, Carpinteria and Bishop Diego will play their opening games Friday night, both at home. Bishop, which will face the Santa Ynez Pirates, plays its home games at SBCC’s La Playa Stadium. San Marcos also is home for the second week in a row.

Westmont College will take on Cal State San Marcos in a women’s/men’s soccer double-header Saturday. Admission is free to Westmont’s games at Thorrington Field this fall.

The Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table will launch another year of weekly sports luncheons next Monday (Sept. 13) at Harry’s Plaza Café.
