TOP SPORTING EVENTS: APRIL 22-MAY 2

There will be close competition in most track and field events at the Santa Barbara County Championships on Saturday (Apr. 23) at Carpinteria High. One athlete who is an overwhelming favorite is Dos Pueblos shot putter Nicholas Scarvelis, the state leader with a best mark of 64’5½”. The meet starts at 10 a.m. and will run into the late afternoon.

UCSB’s baseball team, trying to recover from three heartbreaking one-run losses to Cal State Fullerton last weekend, concludes its series against Long Beach State on Saturday, while the Gaucho softball team hosts Cal State Northridge. The Santa Barbara Breakers play their 4 p.m. Saturday home basketball game against the West L.A. Advantage.

There will be a big three-game baseball showdown between Santa Barbara High and Dos Pueblos next week. Both teams are unbeaten in the Channel League. The first game on Tuesday (Apr. 26) will take place at Santa Barbara’s Eddie Mathews Field. Dos Pueblos will host the next two games on Wednesday and Friday.

SBCC’s softball team (30-5 overall), which secured its first division title in 14 years on pitcher Kailey Snyder’s perfect game (a 12-0 win over L.A. Pierce shortened to five innings), will play its last regular-season game at Pershing Park on Tuesday against Hancock.

The Vaquero baseball (20-14) has clinched at least a tie for first place in the Western State Conference North and will host Oxnard on Thursday.
