A very special thank you to the four new members of the SBCC Board of Trustees and to Luis Villegas, who finally saw the light, for your 5-0 vote. Now the college and the community can begin to heal. And, when the community can finally see accountability and transparency, the donations will start to come back in.

As a former human resources manager and past president of the Human Resources Association, I am suggesting the following:

1) If you are required to provide a contract for the new president, you may want to change/add in a probationary clause, minimum six months, maximum one year.

2) If you need to terminate, it should be either two or four weeks pay in lieu of notice (industry standard) and get him/her out of the office.

3) Why a nationwide search? California should produce some good junior college presidents.

4) Moving expenses should not exceed the cost of moving 14,000 pounds (industry standard).

These are tough times, and the excesses of president/superintendent Serban’s contract did not seem realistic.
