TOP SPORTING EVENTS: SEPTEMBER 6-12

Fresh off two victories over Atlantic Coast Conference opponents in North Carolina, the undefeated UCSB men’s soccer team (3-0) comes home for a pair of matches this weekend against the Big East Conference. The Gauchos will face West Virginia on Friday night, September 9, and Villanova on Sunday afternoon at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium.

UCSB defeated Duke 3-2 on Dom Sarle’s goal in overtime last Friday. The Gauchos had to come from behind after yielding a goal to Duke in the first minute of the game. On Sunday, David Opoku’s third goal of the season was enough for a 1-0 victory over North Carolina State.

Santa Barbara City College is also off to a 3-0 start in women’s soccer. The Vaqueros had a home game scheduled today (Tue., Sept. 6) against Taft, but it was called off. They will host Cuyamaca at 2 p.m. Friday in La Playa Stadium.

Sophomore midfielder Katie Voss produced four goals and four assists in her first three games for SBCC at the BK Invitational in Ventura. Voss scored the game-winner in a 2-1 victory over Cypress, which is ranked 12th in the national preseason poll. The Vaqueros also defeated Orange Coast 2-1 on Morgan Crumpley’s goal in the final minute.

Santa Barbara High and Dos Pueblos will play their football home openers on Friday night. Cate School’s eight-man team will debut Friday afternoon. SBCC hosts Antelope Valley at 6 p.m. Saturday.
