Third Doctor to Determine Competency of Murder Defendant

Wed Apr 25, 2012 | 02:30pm

A third doctor will examine Andrew Balderaz, accused of stabbing Baldemar Leal in a fatal 2009 attack on the Westside, to see if he is competent to stand trial. So far, two doctors are split on his ability to understand the charges and the proceedings he is participating in, so attorneys have agreed to have a third examine Balderaz. If there is still a dispute, the matter could be decided in a trial. Balderaz is one of five suspects arrested in the homicide investigation but is considered the most culpable in the attack.
