Organizers Quell Fiesta Controversy

The community battle royale that combusted when dance judges hired by Old Spanish Days declared 12-year-old flamenco dancer Sadee Broida this year’s Junior Spirit — even though the rules only allow applicants between the ages of 9 and 11 — has come to an amicable conclusion. Old Spanish Days officials announced last week that two young ladies will serve as Junior Spirits this year: Broida and Jessalyn McCollum. In a prepared statement, a Fiesta spokesperson admitted organizers “blew it,” but said they will take a close look at rules and procedures to avoid any future inconsistencies.
