Sun Oct 21, 2012 | 02:12pm

The Open House will celebrate the launch of El Poder Sin Ver, a free Spanish-language program designed to help Latinos living with vision loss due to age-related eye conditions, diabetes or other chronic disease management issues. The program will provide free low vision consultations and more classes, seminars and training on everything from regaining confidence in the kitchen to getting around town safely, and using the latest technology to make living with low vision easier.

“We are partnering with the leading promotora community health worker network, Vision y Compromiso, to help those in the Latino Community with low vision to live fulfilling lives,” said Braille Institute Santa Barbara Regional Director Michael Lavarovits. “Research has shown that there is a huge need in the Latino community for free services to help people living with vision loss due to diabetes or other age-related conditions such as cataracts and glaucoma.”

The Open House will be held at Braille Institute Santa Barbara, located at 2031 De La Vina Street, and will include an introduction at 10 a.m., followed by tours of the facility, demonstration areas on technology, cooking techniques for people with low vision, and much more.
