Teen Joshua Morales Named 2012 Male Youth Soccer Referee Of The Year

Morales, age 17, has been a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) certified referee since he was 15. Through hard work, discipline and determination he has worked his way up the ranks to a Grade 6, which is classified as a State Referee. Morales is now officiating soccer matches up to the community college level.

Morales began playing soccer with AYSO and later with Santa Barbara Soccer Club as keeper for the U13 and U14 bronze teams. His prior experience also dates back to 9th and 10th grade, where he played soccer at Santa Barbara and San Marcos High Schools. However, it was his experience at La Cumbre Jr. High as an assistant coach for Coach Eduardo Mera where his journey to become a referee began. Coach Mera is also a USSF referee and it was he who motivated Joshua to further pursue refereeing.

Now a senior at Alta Vista High School, Morales chose a school which allows him the flexibility to continue his quest to becoming a Grade 1 referee (FIFA level referee) while simultaneously working part time. Morales will be honored in February during “Soccer Nation” at Cal South’s annual banquet ceremony.
