Winter Arts Preview 2013: Theater

Dreamgirls and Presidents, Singing

Thu Jan 10, 2013 | 12:00am
Robert Lesser, Nancy Nufer and Devin Scott.

Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson at Center Stage Theater: Here’s another eccentric new rock musical from the creative team that brought us the Santa Barbara premiere of Spring Awakening. Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson imagines the seventh president of the United States as a hard-rocking celebrity who breaks into song in order to present his ideas and policies. Not only is this “the age of Jackson,” according to one of the show’s songs, but “populism, yeah yeah” is our national credo. The number also includes the line “James Monroe was a douche bag.” If the idea of brushing up on your American history while listening to music that sounds like it could have been composed by Green Day appeals, then the folks from Out of the Box Theatre Company have got a show for you. Plays Thursday, February 14 through Sunday, February 24. Call (805) 963-0408 or visit centerstagetheater.org.
