A 28-year-old man pleaded no contest to two felonies for having sex with a 14-year-old girl and will be sentenced to three years in state prison, according to prosecutors.

Rogaciano Mayo pleaded no contest February 8 to assault with intent to commit rape, a serious and violent strike, and unlawful sexual intercourse where the defendant is older than 21 and the victim is younger than 16. According to prosecutor Paula Waldman, Mayo waived six months of jail credit and will be sentenced to three years in state prison next month. He will also have to register as a sex offender.

According to authorities, Mayo met the victim at an MTD bus stop in Goleta as she was trying to take the bus to a friend’s house downtown to spend the night. Mayo befriended the girl and told her he would help her find her friend’s residence. They got off on Carrillo Street, and the victim went with Mayo to his home, according to police, thinking he would help her find her friend’s house after that.

At the residence, police said, he raped the victim. The victim’s friend called during that time, police said, but Mayo wouldn’t let the girl answer the phone. He later took her to meet her friend, and after Mayo left, the girl told her friend what had happened.

Mayo allegedly admitted to having sex with the girl, but said it was consensual.
