American cyclist Taylor Phinney won Stage 5 of the Amgen Tour of California by 12 seconds after a daring breakaway 19 miles from the finish. The BMC team member built up a whopping 40 second lead while descending San Marcos Pass and entering Santa Barbara, enough to hold off the pack. He rewarded an enthusiastic crowd lining Cabrillo Boulevard with a graceful bow before crossing the finish line. Overall leader Bradley Wiggins extended his lead. Police Chief Cam Sanchez, Councilmember Cathy Murillo, and Mayor Helene Schneider presented the top finishers with bouquets.
