UCSB biomedical scientist Jamey Marth won a $3.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for his work to study sepsis, one of the most common and difficult illnesses to treat in this country.
Marth, Carbon Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, joined UCSB in 2009 to become the director of UCSB’s Center for Nanomedicine. The work he’s done — in collaboration with Cottage Hospital, UC San Diego, and the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute — has already showed great progress, school officials said.
With help from Cottage, the research will be able to translate to patient treatment. “With this grant, we will be able to more rapidly and more effectively follow up on our earlier discoveries of a completely new approach to the treatment of sepsis that once in the clinic may save millions of lives,” Marth said in a press release.
