Certain Highway 101 ramps and lanes between Milpas Street and Fairview Avenue will periodically close starting on Sunday night and lasting through Friday morning, as part of a Caltrans project to make that stretch safer. Closures along the northbound side of the freeway will be in effect 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on the days affected and from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. along the southbound route. Ramp shutdowns — which won’t affect consecutive ramps at the same time — won’t last longer than a few hours.
Workers will be trading the existing overhead sign panels for ones that are more reflective, meant to make them easier to read when it’s foggy or raining. Lights along that section of the freeway will likewise be upgraded for better visibility and energy efficiency. From the Ortega Street pedestrian bridge to the southbound Castillo Street on-ramp, Caltrans will install 12 additional light fixtures.
Reflective striping will be added to the median barrier and the guard railings, and signs prohibiting pedestrians will adorn the on- and off-ramps. The entire project — meant to “reduce the pattern of nighttime collisions” along that stretch — should finish by April.
