An elderly woman was killed in a house fire that broke out at 127 Loureyro Road in Montecito this morning.

According to Montecito Fire District spokesperson Geri Ventura, firefighters from multiple agencies responded to the small, single-story house just before 7:30 a.m. Upon their arrival, the home was fully engulfed. The cause of the fire and the death are still under investigation, according to Ventura, and personnel from the District Attorney’s Office and the Coroner’s Office were on scene mid-morning. Loureyro Road at North Jameson was closed during the incident.

In a separate incident Sunday night, Montecito firefighters responded at about 10 p.m. to 767 Picacho Lane, where a mulch pile was burning near a residence. Strong winds up to 68 mph spread the fire to the house, but firefighters stopped it from spreading further inside the home. That fire was extinguished within about 40 minutes, Ventura said.
