Information about a fraudulent attempt to get money and personal information from families with schoolchildren surfaced at the Santa Barbara Unified School District late last week. The scammers, claiming to be from the school district, had gone to several homes to market a service or product to help children qualify for college scholarships. The district contacted families and law enforcement to alert them to the scheme, said Barbara Keyani, a district spokesperson. The school district message emphasized that scholarships do not cost money or require fees, and that private information should not be given out. All the high schools have college and career centers that can help students with scholarships.
