How shocking it is to see Janet Napolitano wanting to proscribe what can and cannot be said on a University of California campus. She wants to codify what are good words and what are bad words which she will do by calling them “hate” speech. A university should be a place where all ideas can be freely discussed, not a place where students are re-educated by official propaganda. Today education has been so dumbed down that students will accept without question anything they’re told. Napolitano must be proud she is creating so many good little corporate consumers who are so easily controlled.

There was a time when Mario Saviio led protests at Sproul Plaza at the University of California for free speech. That was long ago! Now we have “free speech areas” where someone can presumably say anything they want (imagine that), except of course, as long as they don’t offend the porn professor.

Where is the ACLU in this? There was also a time (1970s) when the ACLU sued to defend American Nazis’ right to march in the heavily Jewish city of Skokie, Illinois. The ACLU then was about civil liberties rather than being the liberal advocacy group that it is today.

George Orwell’s 1984 should be required reading for Janet Napolitano and the Board of Regents of the University of California.
