Santa Barbara Police Chief Lori Luhnow has taken a leave of absence after the sudden death of her fiancé last week.

Marc Homan, who accompanied Luhnow at her swearing in ceremony this July, died of a heart attack Thursday in Coronado.

Luhnow is expected to be off work this week and next week, but said she remains committed to serving as Santa Barbara’s chief. Captain Bill Marazita, commander of the department’s patrol division, is acting chief in her absence.

Luhnow, a 27-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department, was hired this summer following the retirement of Cam Sanchez.

Homan was a retired Naval commander. Funeral services will be private and limited to friends and family.
