Where? Not at Windy Gap, as its name implies, but near the old “glass factory” on West Camino Cielo, about a quarter-mile east of the Winchester Gun Club.
How? The fire is human caused and an investigation is underway. Those with information should call 961-5710.
What’s burned? More than 10,000 acres, from Highway 154 on the east and approaching Dos Pueblos Creek on the west. It’s bordered by West Camino Cielo on the north and humanmade fire lines on the south.
Any homes? Although more than 3,200 structures were at one time threatened, four structures burned, but only one — a motor home — was used as a residence. As of Wednesday, about 200 structures were threatened.
Who’s fighting it? More than 2,500 firefighters based in 28 states, from Alaska and Montana to Goleta and San Diego County, have battled the fire.
What equipment? In addition to hand crews, at least 25 helicopters and air tankers, more than 30 bulldozers, and nearly 200 fire engines have fought the fire.
Any injuries? Six firefighters have been hurt so far, but they’ve been minor injuries, such as bee stings, smoke inhalation, and a twisted wrist.
When will it be over? As of Wednesday, July 9, at noon, there was 55 percent containment. Due to changing weather, the western end of the fire could burn for much longer.
How much has it cost? More than $13 million.
