Local Surfers Fare Well in National Contest

The impressive push by young Santa Barbara-based surfers into the ranks of competitive surfing continued in earnest this week at the Surfing America USA Championships contest at San Onofre State Park in northern San Diego County. A solid south swell provided more than enough surf for the penultimate North American amateur contest as Montecito’s Lakey Peterson, a 15-year-old regular foot, claimed fourth place in the Girls Under 18 division. 16-year-old Conner Coffin took home fifth place in the Boys 18 and Under division, while his younger brother, Parker, finished Number 2 in the hotly contested Boys Under 16 division.
