The gavel for the chair of the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors was handed over to 3rd District Supervisor Doreen Farr this week. The largely ceremonial process, which rotates a new member of the five-person board through the spot every year, takes place in an election year for Farr, who will face Santa Ynez businessman Steve Pappas. Farr replaces 4th District Supervisor Joni Gray as the board chair.

So here's where I have to ask the following question: Is this considered "news" because of the actual procedure or is it because of the candidate?
If this is a normal protocol of the County Supervisors then why isn't it reported on when, say, a "conservative" supe gets the gavel?
Not that I'm in accordance w/ either side of the aisle, but I just have to be curious as to why this is "reportable" on account of 1 supe & not the other.
My guess is that it's a function of political party that deems this as reportable :) henry

My guess is that "conservative" Joni Gray received the same coverage when she took over the chair a year ago.

Agreed about Pappas. But can we get someone of substance to run???? Doreen certainly isn't it. Anyone who agrees with wasting money in a time of economic disaster is certainly not the type of person we need in tough times. Poor choices in their hiring of certain staff, (Brian Roney at Parks and a Vandal to oversee Parks as New Asst CEO), spending diminishing General Funds (Cuyama Pool), absolutely dropping the ball on saving Goleta Beach. Good people like Mr. Stilwell jumping ship. So many bads and so little good out of this Board Majority. Please!!! Anyone other than Pappas out there????
